Q: What are your plans to expand support and resources toward our immigrant population, undocumented or otherwise?

Sovkoplas: Immigration is a subject that hits close to home. I was born and raised in Brownsville, TX on the border with Mexico. My father immigrated to the United States from the Czech Republic and my mother’s father immigrated to the US from Poland. We need to reform our immigration system to make it function faster and more smoothly. If our immigration system functioned properly, illegal immigration would be curtailed significantly. Our legal immigrants need to be afforded every opportunity to integrate effectively into our communities so that they may become engaged citizens. Illegal immigration is a problem that needs to be addressed in a strategic, creative, and all-encompassing way by working with our international neighbors to reach a solution. We also need to determine the best course of action to assimilate our undocumented population while preventing others from seeing this as a backdoor to legal immigration.

I am against HB240. It is not the job of the State Police to enforce immigration laws, and I think that local governments have the right to determine whether or not they wish to be a sanctuary city.
